Biography

Emily Peckham is mental health researcher based at Bangor University whose research focuses on improving the physical health of people with severe mental illness. She has a degree in Chemistry from the University of Bath and began her career in research as a Research Chemist. In 2009 she was awarded a three-year full-time PhD scholarship at the School of Healthcare at the University of Leeds. After gaining her PhD she joined the Mental Health and Addiction Research Group at the University of York where she worked on a number of randomised controlled trials including SCIMITAR and SCIMITAR+ which evaluated a smoking cessation intervention for people with severe mental illness. She also managed the UKRI funded Closing the Gap Network+ which aimed to address the physical health gap for people with severe mental illness. Emily is the Chief Investigator for the NIHR funded SPACES programme which was set up to coproduce an intervention to increase physical activity and reduce sedentary behaviour in people with severe mental illness. Previously she was the Chief Investigator for the OWLS study which explored how the pandemic and the pandemic restrictions affected the lives of people with severe mental illness.
